CIA Mission

Matthew 25:34-40 (Contemporary English Version)

Then the king will say to those on his right, "My father has blessed you! Come and receive the kingdom that was prepared for you before the world was created. When I was hungry, you gave me something to eat, and when I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I was a stranger, you welcomed me, and when I was naked, you gave me clothes to wear. When I was sick, you took care of me, and when I was in jail, you visited me."

Then the ones who pleased the Lord will ask, "When did we give you something to eat or drink? When did we welcome you as a stranger or give you clothes to wear or visit you while you were sick or in jail?"

The king will answer, "Whenever you did it for any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did it for me."

A Good Saturday, Serving God and Others

If anyone has not heard, we have semi adopted the slogan "Seeking and Serving, God and Others" for the CIA. That slogan was put into action this past Saturday when a small group of CIA members went over to a home off Luella and X to remove a deck from a backyard. I had not done any type of investigation on this job prior to heading over, so we did not know what to expect. I thought it could be anything from a 10x10 wooden platform to a very large multi-level structure with planter boxes and posts cemented in. Well, it was the second option for us as we did not waste any time once we got on site. It took us a little over 2 hours to complete the removal of the structure and everyone was plenty tired when we were done. However, it was a great opportunity for us as God’s church to fulfill His commission to us found in the New Testament. Just after Jesus had washed the disciples’ feet, he told them, you call me Lord and Master, which I am, yet I have washed your feet, you should now go and wash one another’s feet…very truly, I tell you, whoever receives one whom I send receives me. John 13:14ff…20.

I would like to send out a very special thank you to everyone that was able to make it Saturday, we even had some water sent over early from a couple that could not make it and that was very much appreciated. I know everyone that was there had a great time and I for one could see Jesus in everyone there. It was a blessing for me and I am looking forward to our next opportunity.

God Bless!

What is Going On

The Wednesday night class “CIA”, Christians In Action has been busy for the past few months. I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of what is going on and to begin to track the calendar as we are starting to see a lot of activity.
We really started learning how to server others in a public format this winter, we spent several weeks going downtown and passing out blankets, jackets, gloves, hats, food and drinks so some of Houston’s homeless. For everyone that was able to attend at least one of those sessions it changed your life, it allowed us, as Christians, to see others the way that Jesus saw everyone. What most people want more than even food, if companionship and someone to talk to. We are planning another trip downtown, more details to come on that.
We also spent a little time with “The Refuge” in Pasadena. This is a great work that I would really like to see us embrace, support and really connect with. This work is only a 10 min drive away and we have the opportunity to make a huge difference right in our very own backyards.
From there the work has grown into service projects that can utilize everyone’s talent, so I am just going to list them with a short description. If you would like more details or if you are tired of talking about being a Christian and would like to join the ranks of the CIA, join us on Wednesday evenings after Simple Supper.

Love the Elderly- Every other week a group from the CIA is going over to San Jacinto Manor to play bingo with some of the elderly who are residents there. You can either help the residents play or simply visit with some of the other residents at the manor. This effort is being led by Mike Jaks and I am sure he would like some additional help.
Love the Community- We have been calling this activity “Faith Walker” because we are headed out of the building and onto the streets surrounding our building to meet our neighbors. It takes faith to simple head out, and trust that God will show you who you are supposed to talk to. So far we have been down 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and Boston streets (first block). We are planning on covering the entire neighborhood before it is over but the response so far has been very positive. We have been able to host a wedding in our building, trim trees, do minor home repairs and visit with several of our neighbors. If you are interested in helping with this effort please see Clay Knight, I am sure he would appreciate the help and support.
Prayer Warriors- If you are not comfortable walking the neighborhood, or if you are not able due to health issues, please pray for and about all of these activities. This activity is one of the most important that we have going on, we need to be praying for our leaders, our members, our neighbors, and everyone that we come in contact with. This can be done either in small groups of 2-3 people or find a quite place and spend some time alone with God, you will not be disappointed.
ICU Baskets- We have put together several baskets that include snacks, games, quarters and even a note pad. We are looking to distribute these baskets to the families of patents in ICU or surgery. As you know sometimes hospital visits are uncomfortable and many times unexpected. Our prayer is that these baskets will help provide at least a little comfort.

We have other ministries also that need someone to help coordinate them, we are planning other events so keep an eye on the scheduled events section and on the upcoming events section to keep up with what is going on.
God Bless and please be praying for us,
